Endodontics Q&A

What is endodontics?

Endodontics, also called root canal therapy, is a restorative dental procedure. During the procedure, Dr. Navarro removes infected pulp from the inside of your tooth. You could need a root canal if your tooth becomes severely decayed, infected, or has a large crack in it. If left untreated, these conditions can cause bone and permanent tooth loss.

What symptoms suggest that I might need a root canal?

The symptoms that could be telling you that you need a root canal include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Gum or facial swelling
  • Pus near your gumline
  • Hot or cold sensitivity
  • Hole or crack in your tooth
  • Tooth discoloration

A root canal strengthens your tooth, protects it from further damage, and relieves tooth pain. It can prevent your tooth from being pulled or falling out on its own.

Is a root canal right for me?

To find out if a root canal is for you, Dr. Navarro looks at the results of your dental X-rays. He evaluates your teeth and gums, discusses your symptoms, and reviews your oral health history. If you have mild tooth decay or damage, he might be able to repair your tooth with a filling or crown.

What happens during endodontics treatment?

Right before getting a root canal, Dr. Navarro numbs the treatment area so that you feel no pain. He drills a tiny hole in the top of your tooth, creating access to the root canal. Dr. Navarro then removes the infected tissue and cleans root canal chambers. He fills the empty spaces with dental material and seals the teeth closed.

Dr. Navarro and his team can fit your newly restored tooth with a CEREC same-day crown to strengthen it, protect it, and prevent further damage.

What should I expect after getting a root canal?

After undergoing endodontics treatment, a treated tooth will likely feel a little tender for a day or two. Maintain exceptional dental hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing every day, and seeing Dr. Navarro and his team every six months for professional cleanings and dental exams. Avoid opening packages with your teeth or chewing on hard objects.
